News from Van Buren — The Van Buren employment agency has orders for one thousand river drivers; will ship the last of this week. Mr. Geo. S. McLaughlan has moved his printing office in the building recently vacated by A. B. Daigle, next door to F. O. Michaud. We notice Mr. George Watson has a very fine display of china and glassware in his window.
Vote Dunn for Sheriff — In a letter to the “Republican Voters of Aroostook County, “ candidate for sheriff, C. E. Dunn states, “I have sat down to more of your tables, slept in more of your beds, kissed more of your babies, sworn out more liquor warrants, and am hated by more men than any man in the county”… “If elected Sheriff, I shall have no friends to favor or enemy to punish.”

First Soap Box Derby for Caribou — The Caribou Chamber of Commerce at their monthly meeting voted to sponsor, for the first time in this town, a regional contest in the Maine soap box derby. The Chamber appointed a committee to organize and develop plans — Boyd Pierson, chairman; also John H. Wilson and William Wall. This outstanding affair will be sponsored in conjunction with Chevrolet automobile dealers of the state and county, and with the Portland Press Herald newspaper.
An extraordinary egg — An Easter gift brought to our office by E. A. Belyea Saturday was an egg with an eight-inch girth the long way and six the shorter way. The egg weighed slightly over four ounces. Mr. Belyea informed us that the prize was a Rhode Island Red (rooster) egg.

Well-dressed thieves — One of the latest chapters in the local “crime wave” was written last weekend when an ax or hatchet-wielding crew broke into Buzzell’s on South Main Street and made off with $3,000 of men’s clothing. Once inside, they helped themselves to some of the better clothing models, carrying off 30 suits and 150 pairs of trousers.
Sharing the load on road costs — About a mile of the Sawyer Road south of Route 89 will be graveled and tarred providing the Town of Limestone is willing to share the cost, Town Manager Charles D. Hatch said this week. The Town Council has authorized Caribou’s share of the improvement. The Caribou-Limestone town line runs through the center of the road in the area where work is contemplated.

New office for DHS — The Maine Department of Human Services hopes to relocate its Caribou workforce to the agency’s new office building on Route 89 by early next month, regional supervisor Jan Stillwell said Sunday. She said DHS officials are still completing final evaluation of the new building, constructed specifically for DHS by developers Emil J. Huck III and Harlow G. Sternberg Jr. The department’s current 10-year lease on its Hatch Drive office building expires May 31.
Rotary Auction time — A fax machine, a motorcycle, hand-made crafts, fly rods, an induction oven, and lawn and garden equipment are just a few of the items that will be auctioned off Saturday night by the Caribou Rotary Club during its 19th annual benefit, auction and dinner.
