Are you minding your manners?
Probably you are, but just in case: Cary Library has an up-to-date little book by Dorothea Johnson and Liv Tyler filled with tips, dos and don’ts and ideas. A gram and granddaughter, they share fun episodes from their lives and travels.
“Modern Manners — Tools To take You To the Top” (395.5 Joh) is an easy read, concise and covers a wide range of circumstances. Primarily written for up-and-coming young professionals whose careers often hinge on tenuous threads, there are topics on meet and greets, foreign business expectations, restaurant routines and telecommuting courtesies.
One memorable note (page 15) describes the older Greek custom of men shaking hands with men. And it is somewhat gratifying to read where pregnant women, handicapped people and the elderly should be given consideration for available seats, opening doors and escalator moves.
Meals get much attention, stating foreign cultures, ways to eat problem foods (artichokes, for one), how to place silver ware and when to never touch food with your left hand … and what must be done when fried ice cream falls on your head from a harried waiter’s tray!
A neat book for refreshing text and ideas. Enjoy.
