Helping from the ground floor up

Rathbun Lumber Co. in Presque Isle, now celebrating its 67th year, stocks quality products to ensure that your building projects will stand up over time.

“We sell all types of building materials for any kind of project, from the basics that take you from the ground to the roof and in-between, as well,” said Alden Rathbun, who owns the business with his wife, Pat. “We have a full line of interior and exterior design products and consultants on staff.
“In addition to our stock, we can custom order many products and have them within days,” he said. “More than one-third of our business is special order.”
Earlier this year, Rathbun’s extended its retail building to incorporate an 84-foot by 65-foot cold storage warehouse. The building is used to store things such as vinyl siding, doors, windows, stove pipe, and special order items including kitchen cabinetry — items that were previously stored in various buildings on the property and at their State Road storage area.
“This has allowed us to pull in a lot of the things we sell most, bringing them all under one roof. By doubling our storage space on site, we’ll also be able to keep more in stock,” said Jamie McLaughlin, store manager. “Having torn down one of our older storage buildings, we’ve been able to open up the yard and make it more accessible for customers and suppliers.”
Prices at Rathbun Lumber are always fair, and very competitive.
“Our prices are based on what we pay for materials, not discounted off a high manufacturer’s suggested list price. Don’t assume that we’re more expensive just because we are privately owned,” said Alden, noting that the business is a member of Lumbermens Merchandising Corp., the largest independent lumber and building materials buying group in the United States. “Our prices are often the same as or lower than the box stores, and our quality is sometimes better. We’ll deliver right to your house and we’ll give you an extra 5 percent off if you pay at the time of purchase.”
Rathbun Lumber is open from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 764-4444, visit www.rathbunlumber.com, or like us on Facebook.
