What Kids Say

Scott Mitchell Johnson talked to children at Fort Fairfield Elementary School

“What do you and your family do to get your home ready for winter?”

“Around the end of October we get a truckload of wood.
We have a red door outside that leads you down to the basement, and we throw the wood in there and then we go into the basement and stack it.
I usually pick up the tiny pieces so I can hold it without dropping it.”

“We help my grandparents put boughs from a tree around their house, and at my house, we get firewood.
We have a fireplace in our house and we have to fill almost our whole barn full of wood.”

“We get the wood pellets ready.
We have a pellet stove in the living room, and the pellets are stacked in the garage.
We also move furniture around so we have room to put the Christmas tree up.
Mom got a fake tree last year, but we’re still going to get a real one for the porch.”

“We start packing up our summer and some spring clothes.
We put them in bins down in the basement.
We also get the warmer stuff out … like sheets.
Then we get our Thanksgiving and winter decorations out, and start decorating for the seasons.”

“We have this hot chocolate machine [Keurig] that we set up.
Sometimes I make apple cider; they’re both good.
Also my Dad buys pellets for our pellet stoves so the house gets warm.”

“We make sure all the shovels are neat against the wall and that we have enough and that they’re strong enough.
We also put plastic over the windows to keep the wind out.
We get some extra blankets out; they’re heated and they help keep us warm.”
