Another reason to shop local

To the editor:
Sears corporate management gave the old alignment excuse as the reason for closing the Presque Isle store. I believe this is double speak for not enough profit. It seems today that companies can’t be satisfied with just a profit. If a company expects $2 million in annual profits and earns only $1.5 million then they report losing a half million dollars. If a company earned one million last year it expects to earn twice that this year. This is how big box companies operate and I am not expecting a change any time soon.

Instead of worrying about Sears, who obviously wants more profit than northern Maine consumers could possibly provide, I intend to stick with the local small business establishments. A fine example is S.W. Collins as they work hard to get my business. They pay attention to what we buy and keep those products on the shelf. They do more local purchasing of product lines. They often provide free delivery for larger purchases and have excellent return policies. Many small business are way more costumer-friendly than the big box and they do not pack up and leave because the bottom line might have been bigger.
I Christmas shop and do most of my home improvement type shopping in The County and will continue to with or without the big box stores. My view is they are beginning to leave a path of empty big boxes behind them that clutters our beautiful scenery.
Our County will thrive as long as we stick together and shop local.
