Petition update from the Caribou Secession Committee

To the editor:
As the Thanksgiving Day holiday approaches, the Caribou Secession Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our fellow citizens living in rural Caribou who took the time to sign our petition. Your support has been sincere, overwhelming and very gratifying in that so many of you stand united, shoulder to shoulder, with the Committee.

As you may recall, the law requires us to obtain petition signatures from more than 50 percent of the registered voters residing within the secession territory in order to have a public hearing with the city. This hearing is intended to inform the public and the City Council of our grievances. Thanks to your enthusiastic support, we will easily exceed that mathematical threshold. But we will not rest until we have made a strong effort to contact every registered voter and give them the opportunity to listen to the issues and sign the petition.
Some households have yet to be contacted while others were not at home when we called. Many of you were vacationing, working or harvesting. Therefore, we are redoubling our efforts to reach each of you. If you have not been contacted and would like to sign the petition, please give us a call on any of the Hotline phone numbers listed below to make an appointment. We will gladly come to your home at your convenience. Hotline telephone numbers with voice mail are as follows: 207-227-6036, 207-498-6120 or 207-492-7291.
The Committee expects to conclude the circulation of the petition by next month and we will keep everyone informed as to the progression of our efforts. If the City Council takes appropriate corrective measures with respect to our grievances, secession may not be necessary. However, should they refuse to act upon the legitimate concerns of rural taxpayers, we shall have no choice but to move forward to the State Legislature in Augusta.
