To the editor:
Over the past few years I have written many letters concerning the way the leaders of our country were running our local, state and federal governments. It seems like every time I listen to the news or television or read a paper, our leaders are having meetings to discuss raising taxes or charging fees for services provided. When are they going to realize enough is enough?
These leaders should take the time to dig out the charters our founding fathers wrote when our towns and cities were established and, above all, get a copy of the Constitution of the United States and a copy of the Bill of Rights and read them very carefully.
America is on a pathway of self-destruction and out of control. When I read in the Houlton Pioneer Times what the city council was planning to do, it goes beyond out of control. Can you imagine what the people’s insurance premiums would go to if they start billing the people’s insurance companies for services rendered? All the insurance companies would do is raise the deductible amount so high the people would wind up paying the entire bill.
It’s a frightening situation because it’s not only happening in our area, it is taking place all over the entire country.
I realize the population of America has grown and that creates a demand for more revenue. My question is, how long will it be before our leaders mark off the streets and charge the homeowners so much a foot to plow snow off the street? Or pass a law every car must have OnStar installed and track how many miles a month we drive our vehicles and start charging us so much a mile to drive over the streets?
I think if our leaders would spend a little time to read some history of past times, they would find when the people are overtaxed, sooner or later they will rebel.
It is disgraceful and a shame to see what was once the richest and most powerful nation in the world decline to the place it is now, all because of a lack of leadership. Our leaders over the years have wasted the wealth of our country.
I truly believe we the people have reached the time when enough is enough. No more taxes and no more fees.
