Watch for deer in roadway

WASHBURN, Maine Police are warning motorists traveling along Route 164 just before town to watch for deer in the roadway.

“Please use caution driving on the Presque Isle Road (Washburn Road) for the first mile outside of the center of town. We have approximately 40 deer using the field just off Route 164 as a winter feeding area,” said Chief Roy Guidry.
According to Guidry, at least four deer have been struck by vehicles in the last few weeks.
“The road there has a deep ditch on one side and a small tree line on the other that makes it hard to see a deer just before it enters the roadway. The speed limit here is 50 miles per hour, however, I would suggest that a more prudent speed here is approximately 35 miles an hour. This would save a few deer from being struck and decrease your risk of damaging your vehicle,” said Guidry.
