Save-A-Lot to open in spring
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Consumers will soon have another option for buying groceries with the opening of Save-A-Lot at the former MPG store on Parson Street, which will take place later this spring — good news for Presque Isle, which in recent weeks has seen a number of store closings.
A warranty deed was recorded Nov. 26, 2014, noting the sale of the property to Double K LLC. Buck Construction obtained permits in December for the construction of a 62-foot by 30-foot addition to the back of the structure, and a 10-by-30 canopy in the front, in addition to other renovations.
“There have been people inquiring about a store in Presque Isle. Save-A-Lot did a demographic study of the area to see if it would be feasible to open a new location, and at the same time, not take away from the Caribou store. The study came back with positive results, and then the MPG building became available,” said Kevin Kinney, owner of the Caribou store and the Presque Isle site.
Kinney said the building is 13,600 square feet and is being expanded to 16,100 square feet.
“I own the Caribou store. The Presque Isle facility will be my second store in The County. I also have two other locations as well — one in Brewer and one in Farmington,” said Kinney.
According to Kinney, the new store will employ approximately 25 to 35 people.
While a definite opening date hasn’t been set yet, Kinney said plans are to be open between April and May. The hours will be 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
“Save-A-Lot is the second largest chain in the country under one flag. We carry Grade A quality products at discounted prices. We have a limited assortment, however, we carry 95 percent of what people purchase on their weekly grocery run. We have fresh-cut meats daily, fresh produce, frozen and dairy,” Kinney said.
Work continues to progress as the store’s opening nears.
“Renovations are going well. The stocking of shelves will begin in mid-March,” said Kinney.
Contact information for the business will be announced later in February or the beginning of March, noted Kinney.
