Fewer hunters — One of the noticeable and regrettable features of the past hunting season was the decided decrease in the number of non-resident hunters, due to the increase in the hunting license from $15.00 to $25.00, with sportsmen claiming a preference for the state of New Hampshire.
London story featured — In this week’s issue of the Aroostook Times, readers enjoyed chapters XII-XIV of Jack London’s “Smoke Bellew” (copyright 1914, Wheeler Syndicate) — the story of Christopher Bellew, a young man who goes north to face primitive conditions in the Klondike, proving himself and winning the name “Smoke.”

Knitters aid war effort — More than 100 garments are to be made up for the European war refugees by the Southern Aroostook Chapter of the American Red Cross. Yarn in various colors is now on hand and being given to those who will knit sweaters for men, women and children.
Ricker traditions — The girls of Ricker Junior College are going to take advantage of their traditional rights and hold a Leap Year Ball on February 2. Another Ricker event that is fast becoming a tradition is the Ricker Minstrel Show to be presented to the public March 13 and 14 at the high school auditorium.

Blake installed as Rainbow advisor — Miss Lorraine S. Blake, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Robert Blake, was installed Sunday as Worthy Advisor of Houlton Assembly 26, Rainbow for Girls.
Mothers to march — The annual March of Dimes campaign is underway in Houlton with the Mothers’ March next Thursday to serve as highlight. The March of Dimes has been successful in virtually eliminating polio from the American scene and is turning its efforts to birth defects.

Oil prices falling — Last week’s survey of retail fuel dealers reveals the average cash price of home heating oil has again fallen, dropping 10 cents to a statewide average of $1.15 per gallon, almost 30 cents below the peak price experienced on Jan. 2.
