Of local interest — Chauncey Bates (Linneus) has purchased a valuable draft horse of Chas. Carpenter of Houlton. Fire Inspector J. G. Chadwick and Chief McCluskey of the Fire Dept. are inspecting basements in the business section. Fred S. Bither has purchased the Ira E. Ruth property at Linneus Corner and received the appointment of postmaster.
New store, newest styles — The grand opening of Lewsen’s Manufacturers Exchange, Houlton’s newest garment store will be held March 16. Mr. Lewsen delayed the opening for two weeks on account of the radical change in styles, which have been adopted during the past month; and had been searching the market for the newest creations.

Bridgewater Academy burns — This town suffered a serious loss Friday morning when Bridgewater Classical Academy was gutted by fire. The loss, which included all textbooks, furniture and records, was estimated between $25,000 and $30,000.
The 1940 models — Automobiles advertised in this weeks paper included: the new 1940 Packard for “thrifty budgets” at $867; the Nash boasting 23.76 “miles a gallon,” priced at $954; and the 1940 Chevrolet for $659 at J. K. McKay Company in Houlton.

Garrison Hill historical site — A new corporation, the Garrison Hill Development Corp., has been formed to hold funds for the erection of buildings at the historical site on Garrison Hill. Thomas O. Bither is listed as president, with Gordon Duncan, vice president; Aubrey McLaughlin, secretary; and Foster I. Gordon as treasurer.

LABORATORY TECHNICIANS — Miss Edna Cowperthwaite serves as the chief medical laboratory technician at the Aroostook General Hospital, with Wesley Willigar, also a medical lab technician. Last year they performed more than 20,000 tests for hospital patients.
Modern math, modern technology — Beginning next Tuesday evening, Ricker Classical Institute will sponsor, free of charge, a course in modern mathematics for parents and those interested. Overhead projection and other devices will be utilized in the classes to give participants a chance to see these new aids in operation.

Measles reported — A case of measles has been reported in Houlton, but according to Marty Sabol, state public health adviser, there is “no need to panic.” He was in Houlton Tuesday investigating the case of measles reported at Houlton High School.
McCarthy organizes scouting day — Ann McCarthy of Houlton has been appointed by Abnaki Girl Scout Council to serve as the local coordinator for Girl Scout Recognition Day, Saturday, March 10, to be held at Shop ‘n Save in Houlton. She is one of 19 coordinators appointed in northeastern Maine’s Abnaki Council.
