Editor’s Note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Memorial Library in Houlton highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determine by the staff.

The second book of “Buddy and Earl” has arrived at Cary Library Children’s section. Maureen Fergus has written the text; Carey Sookocheff handled the sparse drawings – color is subdued. However, the paper quality is wonderful and the storyline is cute and might stimulate more than a few discussions on good behavior. If you remember, Buddy is less adventurous and will still be very likely in more trouble when morning comes than Earl. Earl is the resident hedgehog and Buddy is the pet dog.

Earl decides to take a trip, far-away, and Buddy says a sad good-bye. But although he works hard, Earl doesn’t get far, so decides to explore just where he is. Hoping the hideous ogre doesn’t appear, the fun starts with Buddy’s water bowl which becomes a lake for the night’s swimming. Mom’s hairbrush suddenly appears to be a lady hedgehog for Earl’s attention.

Well, Mom’s purse becomes a monster eating the lady rodent and there goes the garbage can! Making a silent appearance is the hated and feared vacuum cleaner just adding to the exploring excitement.

The night ends with the pals still friends and napping peacefully in their own spaces. And there comes the ogre just rounding the corner!

Okay, how many items are now all over the kitchen floor? Where is Earl? Who is on the floor with all the mess? Who will bear the blame?

A fun book to read and enjoy with the young ones.
