CARIBOU, Maine — The facilities director for RSU 39, which includes Caribou, Limestone and Stockholm schools, updated directors on major capital improvements during their March 30, 2016 meeting.
According to Facilities Director Wayne St. Pierre, significant improvements have been made to Hilltop School, the Technology Center, Caribou High School, Limestone Community School, and the Caribou Learning Center.
Hilltop received some new pavement for the bus entrance as well as the playground, and the department also built a new play area for smaller children.
Three new overhead doors were installed in the Technology Center’s body shop. In addition, the vocational department received a new roof over the main offices, the law enforcement classroom, and the main entrance hallway. Six sections of windows were also upgraded with new siding.
“We have a new water fountain to put in at the shop area,” added St. Pierre. “The fountain is here but we have not installed it yet. We also have some new doors, and as soon as the weather comes around we will replace some of the shop’s entrance doors.”
Both the library and the teachers’ break room in the high school received new tile floors. The wing with labs and the FFA (area) also received new windows, the guidance office’s entrance door was replaced and the facilities department did some light paving around the high school.
As for Limestone Community School, St. Pierre says his department replaced about 19 windows, and changed the siding to a white metal to match the building’s style.
“We replaced emergency exit door in a stairwell near the library,” said St. Pierre, continuing with LCS improvements. “We repaired and resurfaced the front entry steps and we rebuilt all the pool filters that filter water for the pool, which were all corroded and aging. We replaced the rugs in some of the office areas, including the vice principal’s office, and we did some paving right in front of the stairway entrance and also around the flagpole.”
The Learning Center will receive replacements for the front wing’s emergency exit doors, and a spot in the front parking lot will be paved when the weather clears up.
The bus garage has new siding and insulation on the back side, and the department will pave the side sections once the snow is gone.
St. Pierre also reported mileage totals for Limestone and Caribou busses.
“We’re transporting approximately 1,200 students in Caribou and 193 in Limestone,” the facilities director said. “We travel about 192,262 miles a year in Caribou, which is about 1,999 miles per day. In Limestone, we travel about 49,493 miles per year, which is about 283 miles per day. In total, that is roughly 241,755 miles a year.”
