Island Falls Notes

Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, have been in Island Falls recently and while here visited with friend, Riva and with Patti Hartin before returning home to Caribou.

I have just learned that the River Cafe here in Island Falls has changed its business hours from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. to 7 a.m.-8 p.m., and therefore will be open all day to any and all who need refreshment. Summer residents will soon be here, so that is good news for all.

And also good news here is the reopening of the take-out called Meatheads, which was very popular last summer. This is located near Porter’s garage and is run by Mike McNally, son of Kathy, who had a very popular restaurant here for many years.

Martin and Doris Pankratz have arrived from their winter home in Orono. They have had a cottage on Pleasant Pond for many years. Originally from Kansas, the Pankratzes have now decided to make Maine their home state and their many friends here are very happy with their decision. Son, Gary, has just finished building a new cottage at Pleasant Pond and will be spending summers here as well.

I still have the little birds buzzing around my feeders, but not quite as many as before. They arrive in the morning when it is cooler and have a great time eating all the sunflower seeds that the annoying little red squirrel leaves behind. Seems as though the red pest is there before I even put out the seeds. Maybe he thinks I am doing it just for him! Fat chance. And the gray squirrel was there the other evening looking in vain for a few seeds. too.

I have several big crows still lighting in my birch tree out back, so now I am throwing out old bread for them that I had saved for deer, who are no longer seen much anymore, and the crows have a great time eating all the bread.

I am still waiting for the deer to bring any new fawns they might have had this spring..
