HODGDON, Maine — The Hodgdon baseball team dodged a bullet June 9 as the No. 2 Hawks squeaked past No. 10 Katahdin, 4-1, in a Class D north quarterfinal.
Ben Tuttle and Sam Horton combined to give up only four hits and one run on an error for Hodgdon. Horton closed out the game by striking out the final two batters.
“It feels good to get this win,” said Horton, who closed out the game on the mound for the Hawks. “I reached back for a little bit extra there at the end and it paid off.”
Daden Palmer singled twice and drove in a run to lead the Hawks. Matt Tuttle also singled twice and scored a run. Jordan Merritt doubled and scored a run, while Andrew Tuttle singled and scored a run.
“They [Katahdin] played really well defensively, and Tyson [Porter] pitched a heck of a game for them,” Hodgdon coach Seth Dorr said. “We hit a lot of ‘at em’ balls today. We hit the ball hard, but it was right at players.”
Tyson Porter pitched a complete game six-hitter for the Cougars. Dalton Hartt singled twice, stole two bases and scored the only run for Katahdin.
Cougars rally past Ashland
Katahdin advanced to the quarterfinals by rallying to upset No. 7 Ashland, 7-6, in a preliminary playoff June 8 in Ashland.
Devin McGraw’s two-run double sparked a four-run sixth inning for the Cougars. Brody Guiggey finished with two doubles to lead Katahdin offensively, while
Malcolm Milligan recorded two doubles for the Hornets and Airin Harmon added two singles.
