100 Years Ago – July 5, 1916
Send off — The Houlton Band gratuitously gave their services toward the grand ovation given the departing soldier boys.
Circus in town — The B&A carried over a thousand persons to Bangor from the northern division, to the Barnum & Bailey Circus Saturday, 116 tickets being sold at the Houlton station, the Van Buren train carried 576 and more than 400 came down the Ashland branch.
75 Years Ago – July 3, 1941
Garden club meeting — The Island Falls Garden Club members were in Perth, N.B., to hold a joint meeting with the Round Table Literary Club of Andover and Perth. Mrs. John Ogilbey, gave the welcome. She spoke of some of the things which a garden stood for – charm, order, grace, beauty and faith, all of which are needed in the world.
Old account book — The Museum speaks again. Mrs. Emma Putnam Archibald has donated an old account book kept in the store of the father of Blackhawk Putnam for the years of 1845 and 1846. A list of the men who did business in Houlton, prior to the Civil War: Archibald, Bell, Benn, Cary, Cook, Doyle, Dilling, Frisbie, French, Glidden, Gray, Houlton, Parks, Putnam, Smith, Snell, Tabber, White and Woodbury.
50 Years Ago – July 6, 1966
Greatest parade — A crowd estimated by police at between 10,000 and 11,000 persons lined the streets of Houlton on Monday morning to witness the Town’s largest holiday parade in more than 30 years. The Beta Sigma Phi Sorority float was chosen for first place, worth $500, sponsored by Dunn Furniture. Second place among the floats went to J.K. McKay Company, with the International Flying Club third.
Brand new car — Beverly Colter of New Limerick, receives the keys to a 1966 Comet that he won as the gate prize in the Fourth of July celebration sponsored by the Chester L. Briggs Post, American Legion.
25 Years Ago – July 3, 1991
Honored guest — Dorothy M. Parent, LPN, was guest of honor recently at a retirement luncheon hosted by the staff of Madigan Estates at the Asian Palace. The celebration honored Dot for her 52 years in the nursing profession. She began training in 1939 and worked in various health care facilities in the area.
Celebrate anniversary — Tyrone Malone’s Million Dollar Truck Show came to Houlton to help Hogan Tire, Inc. celebrate 35 years of service. In an effort to thank Houlton area residents, as well as those from surrounding communities, for 35 years of support, the show trucks were available for public viewing.
