MAPLETON NEWS
By Terry Sandusky
Last Friday evening, Nov. 4, the Haystack Historical Society held its annual closing dinner for members and volunteers.
Special guests for the evening were the Wednesday Evening Fiddlers, whose performance in August packed the museum for a fun and enjoyable musical evening entertainment. As guests, they were not required play music for their dinner – that honor was given to Wendell Hudson family and friends.
In her report to the membership and volunteers attending, Society President Alice Shepard reported the museum had a very successful year. The Mother-Daughter Tea and the Christmas holiday craft workshop were well attended. Many friends, neighbors and former residents enjoyed the society’s homemade pie and coffee sale during June’s Mapleton Daze celebration. The annual baked ham dinner followed by the Society’s charity auction was well attended and was the most successful ever held by the museum.
Shepard reported next year’s plans are developing for the Society and the Haystack Historical Museum. They include monthly events starting in May and going through November, which is the seasonal closing date for the museum. The events will include a repeat performance by the Wednesday Evening Fiddlers and four workshops. Two annual fundraising events, the homemade pie and coffee sale and the baked ham dinner, are already scheduled.
School book fair
Educators across the world agree one of the best ways to strengthen a child’s education is to read to them and to encourage older elementary students to read more on their own. By becoming better readers, students can strengthen their learning in high school and college.
To help families expand reading in their homes, the Mapleton Parent Organization is getting ready their biggest fall event — the Scholastic Book Fair called: “Bookaneer: Where books are the treasure!”
At Bookaneer, there will be pirates, gold, a treasure chest and plenty of pirate talk. The fair will be open to the public Nov. 14-17 from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and also during the evening Nov. 1, 5-7 p.m.
Harvest supper benefit
The State Road Advent Christian Church’s Annual Harvest Supper will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 5:30 p.m.
This is a free supper; however, donations will be accepted at the door to benefit two local men who sustained serious injuries. Brad Maynard from Mapleton and Larry Adler from Fort Fairfield are going through lengthy recoveries from accidental injuries that occurred this fall.
The supper menu will offer turkey and all the fixings. For more information, call the church at 764-1331. The church is located 6 miles from Presque Isle on Route 227 West, just past Chandler Farms.
Scout spaghetti supper
Mapleton Boy Scout Troop 170 will have a spaghetti supper at the Lions Hall Saturday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. to help with fundraising efforts to attend the national jamboree in Washington, D.C., next summer. Donations will be accepted at the door.
In addition, to raise awareness for those who are less fortunate, the troop will collect nonperishable foods to be donated to local food pantries. They ask that those attending bring food items to support those who need them the most.
Anyone who can’t attend the supper, but is able to drop off food items, may do so anytime during the afternoon or early evening. For more information, contact Robby Gross at 227-4367.
Troop 170 thanks the community for their continued support.
Meal for members
Sue Maynard of the Chapman Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club announced that a turkey supper for the club’s members will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m. at the clubhouse.
The supper is free for all members with a paid 2016-17 membership and invited landowners. So organizers know how much to prepare, RSVP by calling Sue at 764-1236.
Church is thankful
The West Chapman Advent Christian Church wishes to thank all who came out for their harvest supper. Donations received will help with the replacement of the church entry doors.
