Nordic ski season begins in The County

Caribou teams swept compeition at Four Seasons Trail

     The varsity ski season opened this past week, with Nordic skiers gathering for a meet in Madawaska last Wednesday and alpine skiers in Fort Kent Saturday.

     The Caribou girls and boys swept the Nordic skate meet at Four Seasons Trail. The Viking boys posted a meet-low 21 points, to finish ahead of Fort Kent (29) and three other teams. The CHS girls had 24 points, which was better than runner-up Madawaska (36) and four other schools.    

Five Viking boys finished among the top 10, led by Bryce Coffin with a time of 11:11.7 on the four-kilometer course. He was third, while Alec Cyr was fourth in 11:30.2. Emerson Duplissie-Cyr was sixth, Caleb Brown eighth and Evan Desmond ninth.

     Max Bartley of Presque Isle was the overall champion in 10:29.5.

     The Caribou girls also featured five skiers in the top 10. Kendra Furber was fourth in 14:00.3 and Madeline Gudde fifth in 14:10.8. Ciara Richards, Erin Kashian and Jojo Fields were seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

     Isabelle Jandreau of Madawaska won the race in 12:53.3.

    At Saturday’s alpine competition held at Lonesome Pine Trails, Viking teammates Scott Bray and Hope Shea were both top-10 performers in the morning slalom run. Bray placed ninth in the boys’ race in 1:44.86 and Shea was 10th for girls in 2:06.64.

     Fort Kent swept the team results in both the morning and afternoon for boys and girls.

     Caribou placed fourth with 92 points in the boys’ morning race and was fifth in the afternoon event. With only two competitors, the Caribou girls did not figure in the team results.

     Another Nordic meet is scheduled this afternoon at the Nordic Heritage Center beginning at 2 p.m. An alpine meet is planned for Friday at 2 p.m. at Bigrock in Mars Hill.
