MACWAHOC, Maine — An Orono man was unable to avoid striking and killing a moose when the animal walked out onto U.S. Route 2A shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Victor Kauffman, 41, of Orono was traveling south in a 2001 Mazda B-3000 pickup when the moose stepped out in front of his vehicle in this southern Aroostook plantation, according to a press release from the Aroostook County sheriff’s office. Kauffman was unable to avoid the moose and struck the animal with front right corner of his truck.

“The moose then rolled up into the windshield, which is all too common,” Sheriff Darrell Crandall stated. “Luckily, Kauffman suffered only minor cuts and scrapes, perhaps because he was wearing a seatbelt.”

The vehicle was towed from the crash site and is believed to be a total loss, the sheriff said. Deputy Vance Palmer investigated the crash.
