CARY PLANTATION, Maine — An early-morning crash on U.S. Route 1 sent two people to the hospital Friday, according to the Maine State Police.
Arthur Russell, 21, of Brookton was traveling north on U.S. Route 1 in a 2005 GMC Sierra pickup truck around 3:35 a.m. when he reportedly fell asleep while driving. Russell’s truck left the road and struck a tree.
Both Russell and a passenger, Donald Oliver, 20, of Danforth had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the Houlton Fire Department. Both were transported to the Houlton Regional Hospital, where Russell was treated and released for minor injuries, according to a press release issued by Cpl. Chuck Michaud. The corporal reported that Oliver was being treated for serious injuries that were not considered life threatening.
Officials from Houlton Regional Hospital said Friday that Oliver was in stable condition and transferred to another facility.
Speed was not considered a factor in the crash and seatbelts were not worn, according to police. The truck was demolished. Trooper Jared Sylvia investigated the crash.
