115 Years Ago – Jun. 17, 1902
Race — One of the attractions at the Fourth of July celebrated in Presque Isle will be an automobile race between H.A. Edwards of this place and W.T. Barton of Perham. This will be the first event of this kind ever held in the County.
Water wheel damaged — The water wheel at the Collins mill became damaged on Wednesday evening of last week, necessitating the shutting down of the mill for a few days. This water wheel has been in constant use for 28 years and this is the first accident which has ever happened to it.
100 Years Ago – Jun. 21, 1917
Damage — The heavy rain of Sunday night washed away a portion of the underpinning of the bridge on Main street, leaving that part of the bridge reserved for a sidewalk unsupported.
75 Years Ago – Jun. 17, 1942
Injured — The Aroostook County blackout held Wednesday night was marred by a serious automobile accident which occurred four miles south of Van Buren on U.S. Highway No .1 when Lt. Olcott Payson of the Presque Isle Air Base was killed and several others seriously injured. The accident occurred during the blackout between 9 and 10 p.m. when Mr. Madore with his wife was patrolling his area in the capacity of air raid warden. The blackout in the Caribou area proved efficiently carried through with all civilian workers and citizens cooperating.
“Rubinoff and Violin” — Announcement was received just proceeding press time that the Caribou Lions Club will sponsor a concert presented by the famed violinist David Rubinoff here in Caribou, Monday, Sept. 14. The local club also made David Rubinoff and his brother honorary members of their organization.
50 Years Ago – Jun. 21, 1967
Two suspected — A 1966 model car was recovered by Caribou police Tuesday morning after it was stolen from the Access road in an early morning break-in. Police say there are two known suspects in this case who appear to be two young men “out of town” at the present. The early morning entry at Autoland was accomplished after the thieves gained entry by breaking a rear window, then reaching in to unlock it. Police said its presence was reported by a farmer who had found it there.
Switch — The Loring Air Force Base Limelite, the Republican’s sister newspaper, is now a Thursday publication. Prior to last week when the Limelite came off the press Thursday morning, the base newspaper had been a Friday publication for many years.
25 Years Ago – Jun. 17, 1992
Micmacs eye hospital — The Aroostook Band of Micmacs wants to acquire housing and the hospital at Loring Air Force Base, along with Air Force housing in Presque Isle and Caribou, according to President Mary Philbrook. The band is looking to gain housing for some of its 475 members. Philbrook also argued that the band’s health service program would provide free healthcare to its members.
Staff honored — The Caribou School Department honored administrators, teachers, staff and volunteers at a recent staff recognition and retiree awards banquet. Retirees for this year included Leon Hale, 36 years, Althea Hamlin, 33 years, Kay Kelley, 32 years, Richard Michaud, 14 years, Tom Perry, 23 years; and Dan Shaw, 13 years. The buffet menu featured baked beans, sliced ham, macaroni and potato salad, rolls, carrot cake, coffee and milk. Entertainment was provided by the Caribou Middle School Show Choir.
