102 Years Ago – July 1, 1915
Store improvements — W. R. Pipes & Son made improvements in their store, by adding an extension for an office in the rear, making a coal pocket in the basement and other changes which added to the convenience of their store.
La Tena’s Circus in town — La Tena’s Circus had a comparatively small crowd, probably because many people were saving their pennies to spend them celebrating the Fourth in Presque Isle. Those who attended were generally well satisfied with the performance, the stunts of the trained animals being particularly interesting. Small circuses on general principles are better than the big ones, and a clean and genuinely good small circus like La Tena’s , deserved to be encouraged and patronized.
75 Years Ago – June 25, 1942
Presque Isle Future Farmers win state plaque at Orono — Charles E. Cunningham of Washburn, son of Everett Cunningham, Washburn High School agriculture teacher, was elected president of the Maine Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, at closing sessions of the FFA two day convention, held at the University of Maine campus.
Rev. MacFarlane guest speaker at Rotary luncheon — Rev. John R. MacFarlane, was guest speaker at the Rotary Club luncheon at the Northeastland, speaking on various problems. He was introduced by William Mackin, chairman of the public information committee. George B. Larrabee of Lewiston, long time Presque Isle resident and businessman and a charter member of the club, was a guest.
50 Years Ago – June 28, 1967
Presque Isle Cadettes off for Expo 67 — Five Presque Isle Girl Scout Cadettes left for Expo 67. They were Mrs. Parker , Donna Hunter, Kathy Scott, 1st Class Scout Peggy Thibodeau, Kathy Phillips, Karen King and leader, Mrs. William Miller.
Ricker picked Mars Hill man — Ricker College President C. Worth Howard announced the appointment of Salvatore Perry of Mars Hill as professor of physics and Mathematics. He received his B.A. degree from Ricker in 1960 and a Master’s degree from Tuskegee Institute in 1965.
25 Years Ago – June 24, 1992
Playing for the Black Bears — Bridgewater native Julie Bradstreet ended her four-year Division I college basketball career with the University of Maine at Orono Lady Black Bears. Bradstreet, a 1988 graduate of Central Aroostook High School, scored 892 points in a Black Bear uniform. She scored 2,164 points while playing high school hoop with the CAHS Lady Panthers.
PIHS Girls’ State — Representing Presque Isle High School at the summer’s Dirigo Girls State were Gail Vreeland of the sponsoring American Legion Auxiliary, delegates Jessica Arthur, Renee Carter, Sue Wilcox, Dolly Watson, Jill Tobin, Penny Paul, Tammy Pelli and Danielle Derosier.
