CARIBOU, Maine — The Viking wrestlers placed fourth out of 21 teams when they hosted their only tournament of the season Saturday afternoon.
Caribou scored 112 points, trailing only Mattanwcook Academy of Lincoln (161.5), Ellsworth (149.5) and Bucksport (125).
Coach James “Chico” Hernandez’s Vikes were led by Evan Michaud in the 132-pound division, Cory Jandreau in 138 and Kirtas Jandreau in 195, who were all able to advance to the finals before losing.
Cory Jandreau, a senior, picked up the 99th victory of his career by pinning Josh Hesseltine of Mattanawcook in the semifinals. He has a chance to reach the 100-win club during the team’s dual match at Fort Kent Wednesday evening.
Michaud, now with 85 career victories, pinned Bucksport’s Hunter Pelletier in his semifinal match but lost to Mattanawcook’s Deagan Eastman in the championship round.
Five other Caribou wrestlers came away with fourth-place finishes. They were Rylee Saucier in 106, Caleb Robbins in 120, Kaden DeMerchant in 145, Matt McCormack in 152 and Mason Smith in 220.
Jonah Thayer didn’t place in the 170 division but was able to pick up a win over his Woodland opponent.
“All of those what I call junk points add up when the final teams scores are settled and those kids helped us a lot,” Hernandez said, “and this gave them very good experience for the future in staying focused and fighting until the end.”
