101 Years Ago – Jan. 11, 1917
Event and meeting — The high school orchestra played a fine selection in the Pierian club. Miss Madeline Conant sang in a pleasing manner, being accompanied on the piano by Miss Ruth Lenfest, who accompanied Nathan Lowrey in the execution of a fine solo. Mrs. Katherine P. Brown gave an interesting paper on the colleges of Maine. Reports of various committees were given. The last thing on the program was an interesting address by Hon. Columbus Hayford, an interesting account of which appeared in the issue of the Star-Herald.
Officers elected — At the annual meeting of Trinity Lodge, F. & A. M., the following officers were elected: P. D. Phair, W. M.; H. B. Harmon, S. M.; T. F. Phair, J. M.; R. M. Barker, Treasurer; V. E. Howe, Secretary; A. P. Seavey, S. D.; F. S. Walker, J. D.; R. Sprague, H. Wellington, O. B. Stevens, Finance Committee.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 14, 1943
Promotions — Promoted to the rank of major at Presque Isle Army Airfield was Capt. James H. Richardson, of Base Quartermaster Unit. Three other commissioned officers were included in the promotion bracket. They were Capt. John W. Fillius, 9th Intransit Depot Officer, advanced to major; 1st Lt. Ellis E. Survant, Sub Depot training officer advanced to captain, and 2nd Lt. George A. Nordberg, Sub D Supply Officer, promoted to 1st Lieutenant.
USO drive — Donald N. Sweeney, chairman of the U.S.O. drive, announced that Presque Isle citizens had contributed $2,000 during the canvass. The local quota for the drive was $1,500.
Sears manager — Bernice Wheeler had succeeded Hazel Kidney as manager of the local Sears order office. Miss Kidney moved to Portsmouth, N.H. as manager of the order office there.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 10, 1968
Sold most for Pepsi — J. Gregory Freeman, vice president, Pepsi-Cola Bottler, Presque Isle, announced that Elwood N. Jewell, 71, of Presque Isle, was Pepsi-Cola “Salesman of the Month” for December, 1967. Mr. Jewell exceeded the established Quota by the largest percentage. Mr. Jewell had worked with Pepsi for fourteen years. His sales area included Caribou and Loring AFB.
Pledged — Ms. Miriam Gregg, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hoyt Jr. of Presque Isle, a graduate of Presque Isle High School and a freshman at the University of Maine at Orono, had been pledged to Pi Chapter of Phi Mu Sorority.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 13, 1993
Awarded — David A. Morrow, a technology and industrial arts teacher at Ashland Community High School, had been named the recipient of the the 1993 Technology Teacher of the Year Award given by the executive board of the Technology Education Association of Maine. A resident of Presque Isle, Morrow had been a teacher for 22 years, serving the last six years at Ashland.
Hurricane helpers — Ellen Helstrom’s fifth-grade class at Gouldville Elementary School took top honors in a school penny drive for Hurricane Andrew victims. The class collected $100.56 for the cause, the highest amount raised within the school.
Icemen win — The Wildcat hockey squad used a pair of power-play goals late in the second period to open up a 6-1 lead, and they went on to take a 10-2 triumph over John Bapst in a game played at The Forum in Presque Isle.
