CHAPMAN, Maine — Milford Mickey Maynard, president of the Chapman Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club, earned the 2018 Groomer of the Year Award from the Maine Snowmobile Association.
MSA representatives presented the award at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 21, in Palmyra.
Maynard began working with the club in the 1980s, and has groomed with long-track sleds, double-track sleds, a Bombi, a Track truck and a Pisten Bully over the years. He takes pride in the 42-mile trail system that he has logged thousands of hours maintaining.
According to MSA officials, Maynard not only spends all those hours grooming but spends time bulldozing, brush cutting, bridge building and grant paperwork. He also works with local logging contractors, foresters, town officials, neighboring clubs and landowners to make sure the clubs trails are ready for snow.
He keeps an eye on club finances, maintains the groomer and trains any new groomer operators too. He continues to develop the Bull Pen, as it’s called, a sign shop, the Ranger barn and the clubhouse, which started in a one-room schoolhouse and migrated to their current log cabin.
The association selected Maynard from a large field of nominees of trail groomers who maintain Maine s 14,500 miles of snowmobile trails.
