Rising water sets off smoke alarm after sump pump fails in Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Maine — The Bridgewater Fire Department is recommending homeowners keep an eye on their basements after responding to a home where a failed sump pump led to a smoke alarm going off early Wednesday morning.

Matthew Powers, training officer with the Bridgewater Fire Department, said that a fire crew was dispatched to a home on Packard Road shortly after midnight Wednesday when the homeowner reported a smoke alarm activated from the basement.

It turned out that the homeowner’s sump pump had failed and the alarm was activated due to high water, Powers said in a press release.

The fire crew remained at the property until a plumber arrived to fix the problem.

Powers said that the water table in Aroostook County is still high and could pose problems for homes with basements and sump pump systems.

“The Bridgewater Fire Department encourages all homeowners to keep a vigilant eye on basement water levels,” Powers said.
