101 Years Ago – July 5, 1917
Red Cross donation — The Presque Isle Chapter Red Cross thanked the Knights of Pythias for their generous donation of $25, and also the young girls who gave the dance for their contribution of $56.
Fire chief visits — H. R. Pipes, chief of the Presque Isle Fire Department, was in Houlton to witness a workout of Houlton’s new combination engine. He was much pleased with its performance and planned on persuading the town of Presque Isle to secure a similar machine.
75 Years Ago – July 8, 1943
Howe leads Woodman — Edward A. Howe became in charge of the seed potato sales departments of the Woodman Potato Company, announced by Robert Woodworth, the company president. Mr. Howe had been connected with the potato business the past 17 years, handling mostly seed potatoes and traveling extensively from Maine to Texas. He had also handled other lines of fruits and vegetables. Previous to his acceptance of the position, he was affiliated with Maine Potato Growers Inc.
Chapman joins paper — Joseph T. Chapman of Millinocket accepted a position as printer with the Star-Herald Publishing Company. He had been affiliated with newspaper and job printing offices the past forty years throughout the New England States. For the previous four years, he was affiliated with the Millinocket Press.
50 Years Ago – July 3, 1968
Received appointment — Acadia University President Dr. J. M. R. Beveridge announced the appointment of Gilbert Chapman as head of the Department of Physical Education and director of Athletics. A native of Fort Fairfield, Mr. Chapman came to Acadia in 1967 as head basketball and soccer coach. Prior to that, he was director of physical education and athletics at Ricker College, coaching varsity basketball soccer, golf and baseball.
Member of EASA — Goan’s Electrical Shop had been elected an Active Member of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association, Inc. The Electrical Apparatus Service Association, Inc. (EASA) in an international organization of independent motor repair firms with over 1,700 members. Active Members of the Association operate service centers for the repair, maintenance and sale of electric motors, transformers, controls and associated equipment.
25 Years Ago – July 7, 1993
Wheels for Life — The Ashland “Wheels for life” bike-a-thon was a success, raising $1,942 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A total of 32 children participated in the event, held at the Ashland Trotting Park. Prizes were given to those who earned the most money for the hospital. The first-place winner was Tim Bolstridge, who won a 26-inch mountain bike donated by Aroostook Bicycle. Other top riders were Linda Cobb, Michelle Bowring, Mandi Beaulieu and Marc Duperry. There were 27 riders who earned $30 or more and received a T-shirt from the hospital.
Top donors — Among the top donors in a contest at Burrelle’s Press Clipping Service in Presque Isle was a group from the cutting department. They were Patty Smith, Judy Shannon, Betty Rideout, Viola Ricker, Betty Spooner, Lisa Wilson, Gloria Thompson, Marlene Thompson, Nancy York, Cathy Smith, Earlene York, Bonnie Walker, Lori Wells and Annette Sawyer. Throughout the contest, employees collected food and other donations to send to area shelters and food kitchens.
Bridge dedication — Governor John McKernan signed a bill dedicating the Aroostook River Bridge in Presque Isle to the memory of Harold N. Flagg. Attending the signing were Rep. Jim Donnelly; Bill Flagg, Cary Medical Center’s community relations director; Alice Flagg, widow of the honoree; Gov. McKernan; Rep. Mary McBride; April Norris, granddaughter of honoree; and Tyler Norris, son-in-law of honoree.
