115 Years Ago – July 14, 1903
Renters — It is understood that the three stores in the new Cary building on Sweden Street have been rented. Nathan Weston, who has so successfully conducted “The Fashion” in Houlton, has rented the store next to the bank and will open sometime in September with a modern and up-to-date line of dry goods; the middle store will be occupied by R. A. Shaw and Co. with a line of carriages and farming tools; the small store next to J. H. Glenn’s will be occupied by C. Swenson as a tailor shop.
Books — The Caribou Public Library has recently added about 50 new books. A list of books will be published next week.
100 Years Ago – July 17, 1918
Construction — N.W. Smith has begun construction of a new house on Park Street, on a part of land recently purchased by Mrs. Frank Hammond.
Classification — Caribou young men of draft age who are thinking of taking a trip to Boston in the near future are advised to take their final classification with them, as otherwise they may be arrested.
75 Years Ago – July 14, 1943
Lost in blaze — Fire of undetermined origin broke out in the farm buildings occupied by Mal Warren, eight miles from town on the Limestone Road, early Tuesday evening, and both house and barn were completely destroyed within an hour. Apparatus from both Caribou and Limestone answered the alarm, but were unable to save the buildings because the flames had made a good start.
Camporee — All Boy Scout troops of Aroostook will take part in the two-day Camporee at the home of Dennis Getchell in Limestone. Events will include races, swimming and other athletic matches.
50 Years Ago – July 17, 1968
Road surfacing — New to the city streets in Caribou this season is a new paving method which is expected to reduce costs, eliminate dust, fill in road depressions and provide a longer wearing surface. Streets this year are being covered with three-eighths inch of minimum-size no-fines stone, obtained from a Presque Isle firm, combined with 15 one hundredths gallons of tar per square yard.
Examination — Evidence of a physical examination within the past year will be required of each sophomore entering Caribou High School this fall, it was announced by the Caribou School Committee following a meeting Thursday night.
25 Years Ago – July 14, 1993
Smoking ban — Smokers cannot smoke in Aroostook County buildings and now they can’t light up anywhere on County property due to a unanimous decision by County Commissioners last Wednesday night. The smoke-free workplace policy, as proposed by Sheriff Edgar Wheeler, prohibits smoking on property owned or leased by the County.
Magnet school idea — A decision on the future of a Maine School of Math and Science in Limestone may be made at a special town meeting tonight, June 14, in the high school cafeteria. Among those backing the concept are the board of spectpeople and the school committee who say it would benefit the town and local schools. A number of resident who have shown their unofficial airport at two informal gatherings are expected to be at the meeting.
