100 Years Ago – Aug. 7, 1918
New enterprise — Realizing the needs of an up-to-date Battery Service Station in Houlton, several of the garage owners have pooled their interests in such an enterprise and have fitted up a building on Automobile Row, on Bangor Street, exclusively for this purpose. Mr. Wallace R. Gerow, an electrician of considerable experience, has been secured to act as superintendent, and in securing Mr. Gerow who is especially skilled in battery work, the new company feels that the work will be carefully and thoroughly looked after.
New principal — W. G. Hoyt, who has been principal of the Ashland High School for a number of years, has been elected to a similar position in the Houlton High School. Mr. Hoyt is a graduate of Bowdoin College and was an honor man during his entire course, coming to Houlton highly recommended. His is married and has a family.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 12, 1943
Becomes manager — The Puritan Clothing Stores announce the promotion of Miss Zella Gillespie to the managership of the Houlton branch of their chain. Miss Gillespie has been with the local store for many years and formerly had been both cashier and assistant manager. She replaces James R. Frazier. Miss Gillespie is the fourth woman manager of the national chain and the second woman manager in Maine, the others being in New York state and in the Rockland. She heads a staff of three with Miss Edith MacFarlane as cashier.
Wins scholarship— Miss Mary Ann Young, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. L. D. Young, has recently been awarded a scholarship at the New England Conservatory of Music. Miss Young has completed a year at the University of Maine, where she was prominent in all musical activities. MIss Young is working for the degree of Bachelor of Music and will enter the Conservatory in September for voice and piano training.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 7, 1968
Library receives grant — For the third successive year Hayes Library at Ricker College has been awarded the basic grant of $5,000 under the Title II of the Higher Education Act of 1965, and for the second successive year the library has received a supplemental grant of approximately $2,000. George B. Rich, college librarian, states that both grants will be used to purchase the New York Times on microfilm from 1923 through 1949.
Little League fathers recognized — The Houlton Little League organization received a word of thanks over the local radio station during the Red Sox and Chicago baseball game. Boston Red Sox sportscaster Ken Coleman mentioned that a contribution had been given to the Jimmy Fund from Houlton’s Little League. The Houlton Little League fathers played a benefit baseball game on July 28 and raised a total of $60.25.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 11, 1993
New ‘Cat’ — Ruth Hare of Caribou was handed the keys of a new Arctic Cat Puma by Dinah Tidd. Hare won the Arctic Cat sled during the July 4 raffle by the Linneus Sno Sports Club. At the presentation were, Ruth Hare, Clair Lambert, president of the Sno-Sports; Dinah and Elwood Tidd, owner of Tidd’s Sport Shop.
SACS benefit — National Starch & Chemical Company in Island Falls has given a $700 donation to the Southern Aroostook Community School Dollars for Scholars. Elaine Small, president of SACS Dollars for Scholars, was presented the check from Diana Betschner, who represented National Starch.
