FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The board of directors of Tri-Community Recycling and Sanitary Landfill has adopted the new name Aroostook Waste Solutions, reflective of its regional and collaborative focus including the upcoming addition of the City of Presque Isle as a fourth co-owner of the organization.
In addition to the four owners, AWS will provide disposal capacity for the municipal solid waste from about 40 communities in Aroostook County, representing about 70 percent of the County’s population.
Mark Draper, AWS solid waste director, said via a press release on Sept. 10 that municipal solid waste must be managed and disposed of properly, and the organization will strive to do so in the most environmentally prudent and economically feasible way.
“The solution may be recycling; it may be a landfill; or it may be some other management option,” said Draper. “Whatever the case may be, the board of directors evaluates the options and chooses what it believes is the best solution for the region.”
More specific information regarding recycling and landfill operations will be forthcoming over the next couple of months, Draper said.
