101 Years Ago – Sept. 20, 1917
Issuing shares — The Public Utilities Commission ordered a hearing to take place at its office at the State House, Augusta, Sept. 25, on the application of the Gould Electric Company of Presque Isle, for authority to issue 5,993 shares of capital stock at $100 per share to purchase the property of the Maine & New Brunswick Electrical Power Co., Ltd.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 30, 1943
War Chest chairman — Dr. M. D. Harris was appointed chairman of this city for the State War Chest Drive which had opened, announced by Donald Sweeney, Central Aroostook Chairman. Directors assembled at the U.S.O. clubrooms to complete plans for the drive. Those present were Donald Sweeney, Dr. Harris, Capt. G. Forrester, Charles F. West, Cobby Downing, and Rev. John R. MacFarlane. Presque Isle’s quota totaled $5,625.
New florist — Announcement was made of the opening of Cook’s Florist Shop at 99 South Main Street, opposite the Defense Dormitories. The florist firm is operated by Mr. and Mrs. Sidney F. Cook. Mrs. Cook is a graduate of the Gorney School of Floral Art in Boston.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 18, 1968
Plaque of appreciation — James Coffey, outgoing executive director, was given a plaque of appreciation for his work with the Presque Isle Industrial Council. Chairman of the council, Dr. Arthur P. Reynolds, presented him the plaque. Coffey’s wife, Nancy, also received a plaque.
United Fund elects — A Mars Hill man was elected vice president of the Presque Isle United Fund to fill a vacancy created by Richard Russell’s resignation. Verlane Walsh, personnel manager of the Aroostook Shoe Company, was named to the post by the UF Board of Directors. He had served on the board since 1965.
Bridgham takes post — Daniel O. Bridgham joined the Presque Isle office of the Edward C. Jordan Co., Inc., as project engineer for municipal, industrial and agricultural engineering projects, according to an announcement by Edward C. Jordan, president of the Portland-based firm.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 29, 1993
Newspaper awarded — During the Maine Press Association’s fall conference, held at Boothbay Harbor, The Star-Herald attained third place in the statewide general excellence awards. The award took into account all aspects of the newspaper, including news content, sports coverage, photography, advertising and production. Members of the newspaper staff were Brian Blanchard, advertising executive; Joseph Cyr, reporter; John Begin, reporter; Jim Berry, senior account executive, Paula Brewer, news editor; Kitty Scott, receptionist and circulation/classified representative; and Kevin Sjoberg, sports editor. Kevin Sjoberg also served as sports editor for Caribou’s Aroostook Republican and News which earned 14 awards, including second place for general excellence.
