100 Years Ago – Oct. 16, 1918
New management — On November 1, Wilbur E. Carr will assume the management of the Houlton Grist Mill, better known as the Merritt Mill, which for the past few years has been under the management of T. C. S. Berry.
New lumber company — The Twin Lakes Lumber Co. has been incorporated in Bangor to carry on a general lumber business deal in timber and timberlands, etc. The directors are Fleetwood Pride of Houlton and Haven Sawyer and William McC. Sawyer of Bangor.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 21, 1943
Annual Ball — The annual Hayseed Masquerade ball fo the Houlton Lodge of Elks will be held Friday, Oct. 29, at the Elks’ home on Main Street. Music will be furnished by Rod Palmer and his orchestra and refreshments will be served.
New position — Clarence Lloyd, who has been employed at the New England Starch Factory, Houlton, has accepted a position in the Caribou factory, where he has already taken up his new duties. Mr. Lloyd will move his family there in the near future.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 16, 1968
Ricker speaker — A world premiere performance will be given Saturday evening at the Putnam Auditorium when Philip Hanson will present “Seven Pillars of Wisdom,” a solo performance based on Lawrence of Arabia’s own record of his experiences. The production will feature a recorded introduction by Lowell Thomas, world famous news commentator and traveler who discovered Lawrence in the desert in 1917-18 and made him known to the world through book and personal appearance.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 20, 1993
Grand opening — A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the grand opening of Mimi’s Gift Box and Sandy’s Sensational Styles recently. Gathered for the event were Kathleen Armel, retail trade board; Mike McLaughlin, town council chairman; Jemma Bartley, owner Mimi’s Gift Box, Sandy Harris, owner Sandy’s Sensational Styles, and Chris Fitzpatrick, president of Chamber of Commerce.
Heart Fest 1993 — Volunteers for the American Heart Association held the annual heart fest to introduce the public to healthier foods and meals. The volunteers were at Shop ‘n Save and Andy’s IGA. Volunteers present were: Helena Nickerson, AHA volunteer; Pat Snell, AHA volunteer; Susan Beasley and Janet Bates, AHA volunteer.
