It may be only mid-November, but much of Maine can expect to get hit with typical mid-winter weather on Friday, according to weather forecasters.
Roughly half a foot of snow is predicted for most of Maine, with slightly higher amounts possible in some areas. Winter storm warnings are in effect for western Maine and for the eastern half of the state.
The weather could complicate the Friday morning commute, the National Weather Service wrote Thursday in an advisory. Roads in the Bangor, Lewiston, Augusta and Waterville areas could be hazardous.
“This will make travel very hazardous or impossible,” forecasters at the weather service’s office in Gray warned.
Depending on the track of the storm, a few inches of snow also could fall in far northern Maine, according to the National Weather Service. Mixed precipitation is expected along the coast, which likely will produce smaller amounts of snowfall there.
Bangor could get half a foot of snow between early Friday morning and Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service office in Caribou.
Starting later Thursday night, the coast from York County through Portland to the midcoast is expected to get a couple of inches of snow through Friday afternoon, interspersed with periods of sleet and rain. Similar weather is expected further Down East, though precipitation will fall later into Friday evening there than in the rest of the state.
