PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Members of the community had a chance to vote on the best student hallway decorations during a public viewing of the Class of 2021’s “Deck the Halls” contest this past Friday at Presque Isle High School.
Students in all grades were hard at work after school on Wednesday, Dec. 5, decorating classroom doors, lockers and walls, each with a specific theme. Since that Monday they had been preparing for the Dec. 7 public viewing of their decorations.

“Deck the Halls” is an annual contest that the Presque Isle High School student council hosts as the first event of winter carnival activities, which officially take place in late March. All points that classes earn from the “Deck the Halls” competition also will go toward their overall winter carnival scores.
Class of 2021 president Riley Davis said that parents especially have responded well to the public decoration viewing, as it gives them a chance to see each class’ creativity.
“Everyone seems to really enjoy coming out and seeing what students have come up with,” she said. “Decorating the halls is a lot of fun for us. We get to spend time with our friends and try out our artistic skills.”
This year the junior Class of 2020 won the contest for their theme of Dr. Seuss. The halls were all decked out with scenes from the author’s most famous children’s stories such as “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Lorax” and “The Cat in the Hat.”
Second place went to the sophomores for their “Alice in Wonderland” theme while the freshmen took third for their “Under the Sea” hallway and the seniors placed fourth for their theme, “The Jungle.”
“The students love to see the public come out in support of their events,” said George Knox, student council advisor and social studies teacher at PIHS.
