Marriage — Invitations are out for the marriage of Olof T. Pierson and Miss Birdina B. Powers, the wedding to take place next Wednesday at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Powers.
Move — Charles G. Briggs is moving his law office into the new bank building today.
100 Years Ago – Jan. 1, 1919
Dance — A dance was held at the P. of H. opera house Wednesday night. Music was furnished by Kelley’s orchestra.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 29, 1943
Promoted — Mrs. R.A. Flora, Sweden Street, received word from her son, Peter Sweetzer, Tuesday night that he had just been promoted to the rank of major in the U.S. Army. Major Sweetzer has also been slated for three months of training at Mayo Brothers in Rochester, Minnesota.
Two cent increase — Beginning with the next issue, all street and drugstore sales of the Aroostook Republican will be at seven cents per copy. The increase in price is made necessary by the higher cost of labor and materials. Subscription rates remain unchanged for the present.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 1, 1969
Candy for the kiddies — Candy, fruit, peanuts and what have you reached more than 1,300 children of Caribou courtesy of the Caribou Police Department and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Police said 1,385 bags of candy were packed. Ten of them were not claimed. Donors to the fund who have not previously been named included William Anderson, Mrs. Harold Clark, Pride Printing, Mayor Gilman Albair and Sanger Morewell.
Miss Caribou — Sue Mae Brown, a pert 17-year-old high school senior, is “Miss City of Caribou” from 1969. She was crowned Monday night on the Junior High School stage by Kirsten Bell, Maine Potato Blossom Queen and the first “Miss City of Caribou.” Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold V. Brown, Sue Mae was awarded the crown after a 45-minute offstage debate by the judges. She was runner-up in the 1969 Caribou’s Junior Miss pageant.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 29, 1993
Thanks — The Caribou City Council meeting Monday night ended on an emotional note. Councilors Roy Doak and R. Leo Kieffer received official thanks for their years of service to council and the community. Members of the council and the audience gave the two men standing applause at the end of the meeting. Council presented gifts to each of the two outgoing officials. Doak leaves the council after serving 15 years, and Kieffer, after six years.
Joins firm — Gary Hebert of Caribou has joined Advantage Payroll Services as the account executive for Aroostook County, it was announced by Ray Gauvin, president of the Presque Isle company. Hebert, a graduate of Caribou High School and Husson College, has returned to the County from the Portland area where he was a senior corporate sales representative for Cellular One. He has purchased a home in Caribou and will be moving in shortly with his wife, Jola.
