115 Years Ago – Dec. 30, 1904
New office — Dr. H. B. Garrison is now nicely situated in his new office in Frisbie’s brick block, where he is prepared to do all kinds of dental work. He has equipped his office with all the latest and most modern dental appliances for good work.
Reception — The members of the Houlton Woman’s Club will entertain the gentlemen at a reception to be given on Jan. 9. Tickets may be obtained from any of the Executive Board. Twenty-five cents for each guest.
100 Years Ago – Jan. 1, 1919
Promotion— Houlton friends of Geo. Mayo, the popular B and A conductor, will be glad to learn of his promotion to the position of train master for the southern division of the B and A.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 6, 1944
Change of managers — Miss Marie Crouse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Crouse of Littleton, became manager of the First National Store here Monday, replacing Ralph Kelley, who resigned effective Dec. 31 after 12 years with the company. Mr. Kelley accepted a position with the T. R. Savage Company, wholesale grocers, of Bangor, who he will represent in Aroostook County, with headquarters at Houlton.
Assumes duties — Stanley W. Wasson of Corning, N.Y., this week assumed his new duties as manager of the local J.C. Penney Company store, replacing H. Carlyle Stieler, who has been manager of the store here since it was opened. Mr. Stieler will soon be inducted into the armed forces. Mr. Wasson comes to Houlton after an association of 15 years with the Penney Company.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 1, 1969
Winner — Leonard Caron has been announced the winner of the Polaroid camera presented by Rockabema Lodge, IOOF.
Enlisted — Cynthia McLean of Houlton and Bonnie Bither of Hodgdon recently enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps, according to Sgt. Carol A. Bernaby, local WAC counselor. Cynthia enlisted for three years and selected to receive training in telephone switchboard operator school. Following eight weeks of basic training at Fort McClellan, Ala., she will undergo eight weeks of specialized training at the U. S. Army Southeastern Signal School, Fort Gordon, Ga. Bonnie also enlisted for three years but selected to receive training in the stock control and accounting school.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 5, 1994
Christmas giveaway — Ed Cullins of Houlton won an RCA video laser disc player from Shiretown TV during its Christmas giveaway promotion.
Gift of giving — Employees of Peoples Heritage Bank held their second annual benefit basketball tournament at Hodgdon High School Dec. 3-4. Through support of local businesses, individuals, team players, Hodgdon High School and Peoples Heritage Bank employees, a total of $950 was raised to purchase gifts for charity organizations. Gifts were donated to the Battered Women’s project, Salvation Army and the Houlton Wesleyan Church. Thanks were given to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for wrapping the gifts.
