To the editor:
A huge thank you to the SAD 1 school board.
Thank you for reinstating harvest break and putting the sustainability of the agricultural community and region ahead of the convenience of a statewide consistent schedule. If it’s any consolation to the community, a lot of people think that all schools start after Labor Day, but I do have customers in the Mid-Atlantic states where the schools return the first week of August so they can complete the first semester by Christmas break. In these same school systems, their summer break allows the students to help with the harvest because their potato harvest is in June and July. I know the students help because I see it when I visit my customers.
It is a great relief to know that there will continue to be an available student workforce and that we may not have to make unaffordable investments in equipment from away that may or may not work.
Thanks so very much.
