CARIBOU, Maine — Prompted by at least a dozen deer-related vehicle accidents this winter — three in just the last week — Caribou police are warning motorists in the area to be vigilant.
There are three high frequency deer crossing areas, with one in particular posing the greatest danger, according to Laura Adams, administrative assistant with the Caribou Police Department..
Drivers traveling southbound on Route 1 are most likely to encounter a deer just before the Main Street intersection next to the Caribou Inn and Convention Center, said Adams, who added that it is the department’s “major area of concern.”
Additionally, police have received reports of deer popping out on the Washburn and Lombard roads.
Luckily, the accidents have not resulted in any serious injuries, with many reports indicating that the deer are running out into the roads toward motorists and hitting the sides of vehicles.
While it is difficult for motorists to anticipate a deer heading straight for their vehicle, Caribou police advise drivers to be especially mindful in the three specified areas, especially during sundown, to avoid a potential collision.
