101 Years Ago – Feb. 28, 1918
County Lodges meeting — The I.O.O.F. District, composed of the following Lodges, Mystic Tie, Presque Isle; Aroostook Valley, Caribou; Ashland Lodge, Ashland; Stockholm Lodge, Stockholm; Westfield Lodge, Westfield; and Industry Lodge, Washburn; met at Industry Lodge, Washburn. Ashland Lodge exemplified degrees and Grand Master presented.
Afghans on display — The pupils of the Gouldville School did a good stunt at knitting woollen afghans. They were made of small squares and when completed were 8×8 feet in size. One was on display in Clayton Steele’s drug store window. The centerpiece was a large red cross with gray filing, the work of a lady friend.
75 Years Ago – March 2, 1944
Dayroom for Unit Four — Members of Unit Four were the recipients of furnishings for a new dayroom, according to an announcement made by C. Milton Jackson, field director of Red Cross activities. Money for the furnishings were donated through the facilities of the Northern Maine Camp and Hospital Council, including Red Cross chapters in Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Fort Kent and Van Buren. The five chapters raised about $100 apiece for the project. Appreciation for the gift was expressed by both officers and enlisted men of Unit Four.
Dubay appointed — Mrs. Carrie Dubay received appointment from Governor Sewall as chairman of the Presque Isle Board of Registration. She had been a member of the board for the past three years.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 26, 1969
Toured local lands — Brenda Baker, known as the living trademark of Maine’s potato industry, toured Aroostook County to acquaint farmers with the program she presented. The Lewiston housewife told Rotary Club members that the amount of publicity Maine potatoes received through her travels was “invaluable.” The charming Maine representative visited 15 major cities in the previous six weeks promoting the economical and nutritional values of potatoes. She attended trade shows and luncheons, supermarket promotions, civic meetings and seminars.
$500 Award — Steven C. Cyr of Presque Isle, a junior in chemical engineering with a major in pulp and paper technology at the University of Maine, was awarded the Penick and Ford Scholarship of $500 for the current college year. The award was made by Paul J. Shirley Jr. of New York City, eastern manager, paper industry engineering, for Penick and Ford Ltd.
25 Years Ago – March 2, 1994
‘Who’s Who’ — The 1994 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges” included the names of 15 students from the University of Maine at Presque Isle who were selected as national outstanding leaders. Campus nominating committee and editors of the annual directory included the names of these students based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. They joined an elite group of students selected from more than 1,400 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations. Students named from the local area were: Kelly Gordon, Ghent Holdsworth, Melanie Johnson, Gary C. Schenauer and Tyna M. Perrault, all of Caribou; Gregory Reed, Easton; Shawn E. Cote, Fort Fairfield; Clifford L. Rhome, Limestone; Tamera Blades, Monticello; Dawn D. Martin, Presque Isle; and Khristina Michaud, Stockholm.
FFA members — The Washburn Rotary Club recognized the Future Farmers of America at Washburn District High School by presenting them with a plaque if recognition for the club’s performance at the National FFA Convention, held in Kansas City, MO. Amy O’Donnell won first place in dairy showmanship, while James Rowbotham finished third in dairy judging at the convention.
