GORHAM and LIMESTONE, Maine — A student team from the Maine School of Science and Mathematics captured first place in the Maine State Science Bowl, held March 2 at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
It was an exciting Saturday as 20 teams from 12 Maine high schools battled it out answering questions related to biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy, energy, and mathematics.
After 10 rounds of play, including two tie-breaker sets to determine placements for the semifinals, MSSM’s Team A emerged victorious with a win over the Scarborough A team.
MSSM Team B placed fourth in their division, but did not advance to the semifinals, school officials said.
This is MSSM’s fourth win, with previous victories in 2007, 2013 and 2014. The winning team now receives an all-expense-paid trip to the National Science Bowl competition, which is held just outside Washington, D.C., at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, April 25-29.
While at nationals, MSSM will compete against schools from around the U.S., as well as listen to lectures from leading scientists and visit many of the spectacular museums found in the nation’s capital.
MSSM Team A members, coached by Dr. Debbie Eustis-Grandy, are Daniel Brower of Carmel, James Hawkes of Portland, George Johnson of Kennebunkport, Jay Philbrick of North Yarmouth and Jordan Theriault of Caribou.
MSSM Team B is comprised of Madison Albert of North Yarmouth, Amanda Chen of Thomaston, Annie Giroux of Belgrade and Mari Witmer of Fort Kent, with Tracy Meyer as coach.
