HOULTON, Maine — As you may know Gracie , the little black kitten, has been at the vet clinic for the last three weeks. When she arrived at the clinic, she was neurological and the outcome did not look good.
We chose to give Gracie every chance possible to live. In the days after she arrived at the clinic she showed great signs of improvement while on antibiotics and steroids.
In speaking with the vet, she wanted her to stay at the clinic a while longer just in case things started to decline. We were all so excited with her progress and were sure that she would be back with us in another few weeks.
Gracie’s life had been anything but normal since the time she was born. She was born under a trailer in the most unsanitary conditions and had an injury to her eye in the first 6-8 weeks of her life. She was born into a cat colony of about 15 cats, none of which were healthy.
The day Gracie came to The Ark her life was about to change forever. As time passed Gracie became more introverted and at 8 months old she only weighed 3.7 pounds. Then came the day that we found her and she couldn’t walk or stand. That day she was rushed to the vet clinic. Everyone at the clinic took such good care of this sweet little girl. They showed her kindness and love. She was comfortable with an endless supply of food and a clean comfy bed to sleep on.
Sadly despite everyone’s best efforts Gracie died Saturday, June 8. We were heartbroken. If any cat deserved a chance it was Gracie and while we are not sure what happened we are sure that she was loved. We take comfort in knowing that Gracie did not die under a trailer without ever experiencing the human touch. Gracie was the most content when she was being held and cuddled. She particularly loved Cheryl one of our volunteers who always took the time to hold her and love on her. Gracie loved that.
Gracie will be cremated and returned to the Ark,where her ashes will be placed in the chapel. Goodbye sweet girl you will be missed. You have taught us to take time to smell the roses and that every life is worth saving. You were only with us for a very short time but you touched our hearts and souls. Run be free, chase the butterflies and be the sweet kitty that you were meant to be.
