VASSALBORO, Maine — The Houlton golf team placed tied for fourth at the State Class C golf championships Saturday at Natanis Golf Course.
Kent’s Hill won the Class C title with a 332, followed by Orono at 342 and St. Dominics at 362. Houlton tied with North Yarmouth Academy at 365.
“For a young team we played really well,” Houlton coach Dave Grant said. “We shot 365, which was right around our average for the year. It was a great experience for the underclassmen.”
The Shires are returning four sophomores, two freshmen, and a junior this year, but are losing two valuable seniors — Isaac Vega and Matt Seder. Vega qualified for the state individual tournament, to be played Saturday, Oct. 12, at Natanis, based on his finish at the PVC event earlier in the week.
“Isaac has been with me for four years and has been the catalyst of this year’s team,” coach Grant said. “Matt has been with me for the last two years after returning from Ireland.”
Individual scores for the Shires were Vega 87, Seder 118, Collin Moody 83, Garett Harvey 85, Kollin Irish 110, and Gage Bartlett 111.
“The future is looking very promising for the years to come,” Grant said.
