PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook County Action Program childcare program expansion has made space for 24 more children in Presque Isle.
“ACAP’s mission is to respond to community needs,” Director of Programs Sue Powers said.
“When we learned of an immediate need for child care slots in Presque Isle, our team went to work to make expansion plans.”
Since last year’s COVID-19 restrictions and with many parents out of work or working remotely, it’s been difficult for childcare providers to stay open and more than 100 licensed providers in the state have closed, according to Powers.
But now that many parents are going back to work, there are few childcare options available.
“Without reliable, safe and affordable child care, moms and dads are unable to get back to work to support both themselves and their children,” she said.
Because of this, ACAP decided this past week to open two additional child care rooms and with this expansion they will serve an additional 24 children under the age of 5.
“Expanding child care not only requires licensed space, which we have at Gouldville, but it requires a skilled and trained team of early childhood professionals,” Powers said. “Between existing staff and new recruits, we will be able to open these additional child care classrooms between March 29 and April 12.”
ACAP also offers childcare in Houlton, Caribou and Fort Kent.
