100 Years Ago – April 14, 1921
Fresh maple syrup — Fayette Blackstone of Perham was in Caribou Monday delivering many gallons of maple syrup to customers. Mr. Blackstone has a well earned reputation for making about as fine maple syrup as can be found anywhere.
New dealership — H.M. Cates & Son have been appointed Oakland-Pontiac Dealer in this community. The public is invited to visit the showroom on Mechanic Street.
75 Years Ago – April 10, 1946
Attends meeting — Calvin Flagg, an x-ray technician at the Aroostook General Hospital, attended a meeting Wednesday of the Maine Society of X-Ray Technicians in Bangor.
New job — Ron M. Hayes, principal of Ricker Classical Institute and Rider Junior College since 1926, last week tendered his resignation. He has accepted a position with the Maine Division of the Veterans Administration, as advisor for training and rehabilitation for Aroostook County.
50 Years Ago – April 14, 1971
Open house planned — The new Agway Store on the North Road in Houlton will conduct an Open House this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On display in the store will be the complete line of Agway products for the home, farm and garden.
25 Years Ago – April 10, 1996
FAA radar — Last week construction began on an $8 million radar tower for the FAA. The 80 foot tower is located just off the Albair Road in Caribou and when complete will sport a white dome cover to protect the constantly rotating radar equipment. Two technicians will maintain the local site.
Sap boiling time — Mark Goughan keeps his fire stocked in his wood burning stove at Goughan Farms in Caribou. It keeps his maple syrup sap fluid bubbling in an evaporator situated in a sugar camp on his farm. He and his wife, Gloria Goughan, are in their fourth year of making maple syrup with the help of employee Timothy Holm.
