June is generally a month that also marks the height of “kitten season,” when large litters of kittens are born and often end up in animal shelters.
Luckily, here at the Central Aroostook Humane Society, we have seen a dramatic drop in the cat population over the past five years, mostly due to our spay and neuter program.
But we have also seen our cages become filled up in the blink of an eye due to a seizure of animals, multiple pregnant cats surrendered from homes, or stray kitties who are brought in that are due to give birth.
The one constant at our shelter is the fact that each and every cat and kitten is loved and cared for until a loving home is found. They are given the proper medical attention and care that will give them all a fighting chance at a long, happy life. We can’t say enough about the incredible and dedicated employees that we have here at the Central Aroostook Humane Society.
Every June during National Adopt a Cat Month, hundreds of felines find a forever home, thanks to the constant campaigning done by numerous cat lovers across the country.
Why should you adopt a cat? Because for the most part they are very social, harmless and loving creatures who are easy to keep as pets and provide some of the best cuddles at night. Sure, some of them will act a little finicky and entitled, but that just adds to their charm.
As we put the focus on June and the plight of so many unwanted cats, we aim to increase awareness on everyone’s part by promoting this wonderful cause of adopting a cat into your home.
As I was reading the other day, I came across a few fun facts about cats on nationaltoday.com.
Did you know that cats sleep 70 percent of their day away? I can verify this with my previous kitty, Annie.
Cats hardly ever meow at each other. Meowing is definitely the language kitties develop to speak to their humans.
The oldest cat on record was named Crème Puff, and she died when she was 38 years old. Wow!
While humans have 206 bones in their bodies, cats have a whopping 230.
And last but not least, felines have the ability to jump six times their length. Of course, as a cat owner, I can tell you this is usually onto an area where they shouldn’t be.
You can help advance the cause of Adopt a Cat Month by spreading the news across your social media or posting videos and photos if you have a special feline in your family. Anything that you can do to help promote a love for animals is a beautiful thing.
