75 Years Ago – Oct. 30, 1947
Reece is Houlton Youth Council president – The Youth Council, an advisory group assisting the Recreation Department, held its annual meeting for election of officers at the Recreation Center Thursday night and elected Paul Reece, a sophomore at high school, to lead the group for the 1947-1948 season.
Miss Barbara York of the junior class was elected vice president; Bud Larson, senior class, was elected secretary; and Theressa Skehan of the junior class was elected chairman of the program committee.
Retires from postal service after 28 years– After 28 years of service as an employee of the federal government, Post Office Department, Arthur S. Cleveland has been retired and was recently a guest at the dinner given in his honor at the Rugan Camp on Letter B. Mr. Cleveland entered the postal service in 1919 and since that time has served as a letter carrier on the same route, No. 2, which includes Court, High, School, Cleveland and Columbia streets in the residential section and other streets in that area.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 1, 1972
Bulldogs close soccer season with 7-7-1 mark – The Ricker College Bulldogs ended their soccer season with a tie game with the University of Maine – Presque Isle, four to four, on Wednesday, and a loss to Husson College 10 to 3 on Friday. Against UMPI, Ricker’s Neil Hollander opened the scoring on an assist by bill Wales. UMPI came back with goals by Mike Brown on an assist by Claude Rioux and Ed Marshall assisted by Al Smith. The Bulldogs’ Bob Brinsmade tied the score at 19:17 in the period, ending the scoring for the first half. In the second half UMPI’s Chuck Strong scored at 37.21, but Wales tied the score again with three minutes left in the game. In the overtime period, Mike Jackson scored for Ricker only to have the game tied again by a goal by UMPI’s Mike Brown. Ricker had 29 shots on goal while UMPI had 25. The Bulldogs’ goalie, Larry Jensen, had 25 saves, while UMPI’s Dave Pelton had 21.
Ricker grad has Dead River post – Charles D. Howell, President of Dead River Company, has announced the appointment of Forest C. Greenier to the position of general manager, Superior Oil Company, Rockland. Mr. Greenier, a native of Caribou and a graduate of Ricker, has been employed by Dead River Company for 17 years and has been manager of Clappison Oil Company in Bath for the past eight years.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 12, 1997
Local veterans honored at ceremony – More than 200 local area veterans and their guests were honored November 8, at a free dinner and special tribute at the Hodgdon Elementary School. Members of the Freewill Baptist Church of New Limerick sponsored the event, while local merchants donated food and gifts. Pastor Dave Tuttle called the event, “A blessed success, in that I saw some real happy faces during our old- fashioned home cooked meal and the patriotic music which followed. It was our way of saying ‘thank you’ for your service to the vets and their loved ones, who have sacrificed so much for this great nation.”
