Fort Kent skiers qualify for regional competition

FORT KENT, Maine — Local high school athletes have qualified for a regional cross-country ski competition. 

High schoolers competed in the Maine State Nordic Team qualifier the weekend of March 4-5 at Black Mountain in Rumford for a chance to represent Maine at the NENSA New England U16 competition. 

St. John Valley skiers who qualified are Rowan Tanguay, Emmerson Bois, Addison Chasse, Alden Reardon and Quinn Michaud of Fort Kent. Maggie Bell and Madison Thibault of Caribou Community School also qualified.

 The New England Championships will be held at the Fort Kent Outdoor Center March 17-19.

The championship event features the top 24 boy and 24 girl Nordic skiers from Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut, and some guest skiers from Atlantic Canada and the Midwest, according to Fort Kent Nordic ski coach Carl Theriault.

The competition will consist of three days of competition with four events including a freestyle race, a classic race, a cross country event and a mixed team relay.
