BREWER, Maine — The Houlton/GHCA girls showcased incredible performances as they competed in the PVC Small School championship at the Brewer Community School on Saturday, May 27. Despite having only six athletes that qualified for the championships, their collective efforts earned them a remarkable total of 62 points and secured an impressive third place in the team standings.
Out of the 16 teams participating in the girls’ championship, a notable 13 teams managed to score. Bucksport would win the team title with 164 followed by 2. Orono 131, 3. Houlton/GHCA 62, 4. George Stevens 50, 5. Bangor Christian 37, 6. Piscataquis 35, 7. Sumner 30, 8. Central 27, 9. Washington Academy 17, T10. Foxcroft Academy and Mattanawcook Academy 12 12. Penquis 10, 13. Narraguagus 2.
Competing for the boys were James Brady and Landon Lafferiere, both of whom were able to run to top 10 performances in each of their events but were unable to grab any coveted scoring positions. Fifteen boys teams were able to score at the meet including 1. Orono 178, 2. George Stevens 67, 3. Foxcroft Academy 62, 4. Bucksport 60, 5. Washington Academy 55.5, 6. Sumner 48, 7. Central 43, 8. Lee Academy 23, 9. Bangor Christian 14, T-10. Dexter and Greenville 10, 12. Narraguagus 7.5, 13. Blue Hill 4, 14. Penquis Valley 2, 15. Mattanawcook Academy 1.
“Our kids displayed an awe-inspiring level of determination and resilience, even in the face of the hottest temperatures we have seen this year. Their ability to maintain focus and deliver outstanding performances in such challenging conditions is a testament to their unwavering dedication and mental strength,” said Houlton/GHCA assistant William Janakis.
Scoring for the girls was Ariana Ardell with a pair of new personal best times in the 100 (6) and 200 (4), Natalie Johnson with her efforts in the 1,600 (3), 800 (4), and 3,200 (4), Leanne Ross’ fifth-place run in the 1,600, Andrea Ross with her new PR in the high jump (3) as well as the 3,200, and Teanne Ewings with her PVC Championship run in the girls 800 as well as a pair of PVC runner up positions in the girls 1,600 and 3,200. The 4×800 team of Johnson, L Ross, A Ross, and Ewings also scored a runner-up position at the meet contributing to the team score.
