We continue to be blown away by all the donations of supplies, pet food, toys, treats, blankets, cleaning products and so much more.
Since the recent seizures of eight dogs and 39 cats, another 11 puppies with their mom arrived at the shelter within a matter of days. The outpouring of support has been just incredible. Businesses, individuals, children and club members all have stopped by with much needed items. This will decrease our supply costs for months. So we send a huge thanks to all who have been so very generous.
If you are looking for an easy way to contribute to the Central Aroostook Humane Society, we have an account at two redemption centers in Presque Isle, Parson Street Redemption Center at 127 Parsons St. and Presque Isle Redemption Center at 2 Washburn Rd. They are happy to help you donate all or part of your bottle haul. Every single donation is greatly appreciated by all your furry friends at the shelter.
Since we are right in the thick of winter, it’s important to remember a few tips to keep your pet happy and healthy until those welcome signs of spring. Exposure to winter’s dry, cold air, sleet and snow and even the occasional dreaded freezing rain can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin. Winter walks can become downright dangerous if pets lick chemicals from ice-melting agents off their bare paws.
Do your pet a huge favor. After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals. Check for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes.
A great tip is to massage petroleum jelly into paw pads before going outside. This can help protect from salt and chemical agents.
Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle of coolant or antifreeze, because this is lethal poison for dogs and cats.
If possible, keep your furry family member inside where it is warm and safe. In addition, just like summer, don’t leave pets alone in a car. During cold weather cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold. Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet.
There are many beautiful, mild winter days to enjoy the benefits of a nice long walk with your canine buddy, and we hope that many will take advantage of the fresh air and keep moving.
