50 Years Ago — March 20, 1974
More Mcwinners – Every Thursday night for the past month Mrs. Cecile Picard, president of the Senior Club, has been taking a group of 15 to 18 seniors to McDonald’s in Madawaska for supper. Funds for these outings come from the 25-cent donation each senior gives at meetings. Eating out seems to be one of the seniors’ greatest pleasures. 55 already had their outing, which will continue until each of the members has had a turn.
25 Years Ago — March 24, 1999
Residents pitch in to aid others – The generosity in Van Buren on Saturday, March 20, 1999, was overwhelming. Cadette Girl Scout Troop 673 had a toiletry drive to benefit the Battered Women’s Shelter, but the community opened their coffers and food, money and even bottles were given. The troop donated the toiletries and money to the shelter and the local food bank will be rewarded with several boxes full of needed food. The four girls who took part in the event were rewarded with the feeling of having helped others. They worked on their goal of earning their Silver Awards.

Factory layoffs now permanent — Workers at Creative Apparel who were temporarily laid off in November 2013 are now permanently laid off, according to Julie Rabinowitz, director of communication at Maine Department of Labor. “We have received a (Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Rabinowitz wrote in a March 17 e-mail to the St. John Valley Times. More than 80 employees were laid off at the Fort Kent manufacturing facility in late November.
